A Prayer for Wisdom

We are in anxious times – a prayer for wisdom.

 Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice?
On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads
She takes her stand;
Beside the gates in front of the town,
At the entrance of the portals she cries out.
Proverbs 8:1-3

Oh Wisdom – we are in anxious times. Not only because of a pandemic but because of great uncertainty with our country’s identity and values. We have strayed from discerning what serves one another in right relationship to live more fully as a community. We have exchanged knowledge for emotion; prudence with impulse. We confuse politics – looking to a savior to fix things – with being political and engaging ourselves in bringing about righteousness.

We look for certainty in people’s words rather than embrace our uncertainty, Because…
we want answers without examining the questions.
we want solutions without learning about the conflict at hand.
we want to return to some perceived comfort without reflecting that where we have come from is a precursor to our current condition.

We are in anxious times of our own making.
Desiring comfort, we forsake compassion.
Seeking individuality, we deny community.
Living in fear, we skirt around wisdom and grasp for temporary security, justice is crushed by ignorance.
These are chaotic times.

Oh Wisdom – grant us your prudence, discretion, insight and strength. May we hate the evil of pride and arrogance that claims easy answers and increase our willingness to seek knowledge and instruction. Grant us diligence to be the faithful stewards we are created to be. May we evolve in understanding and grow in Wisdom.

in this together…
