Baby it's cold outside!

Cardinal, blue jay, hairy woodpecker and red-bellied, pine siskin, goldfinch and housefinch, junco, Carolina wren, yellow-rumped warbler and orange-crowned, chickadee, and robin … all are guests are our backyard feeder on this snowy, 18 degree day in Dallas.

Why is it that birds don’t freeze in this frigid weather? Too long outdoors unprotected and my nose or fingers could suffer frostbite. Yet these winged creatures that could fit in the palm of my hand fly into the winds and light on the feeders, immersed in cold temperatures. I could look up the physiological explanation for their warmth – something about downy feathers, and regulated metabolism – but today I’ll simply sit with the fascination and marvel at the mystery of evolution and beauty of creation.

For the beauty of the earth
for the beauty of the skies
for the Love which from our birth
over and around us lies.
Lord of all to thee we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

With loving gratitude and prayer that your soul may experience delight today.
In this together,
Amy
