The darkest valley

Inca Trail on the way to Macchu Pichu - awm

I was meditating with Psalm 23 this week. This scripture is commonly associated with funerals and unfortunately often overlooked otherwise. But as I brought a heavy heart to a time of quiet, I discovered a new comfort in these age-old words. Is the valley dark because of what it holds or because of the shadows cast upon it?

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff -
they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4

Shadows lay across my path. What lurks in the unknown? Possible danger? Merely a threat? Although it may darken my path, a shadow itself cannot hurt me.
Could the shadow be one of Presence - the Holy hiding what is fearful in my path? Protecting me from seeing everything so I focus my steps by the rod and staff that guide and comfort me. Yes there are shadows as I walk this valley. Shadows from the mountaintop where I had been but yesterday. Shadows keeping me mindful of the mountainous Presence that abides – my comfort and heart of my peace.

Peace be with you friends.
in this together…
